Job Description

Blackbird is looking to hire a Data Analyst to provide parental leave cover on a 12 month contract.

About the role

Blackbird is seeking a passionate Data Analyst to supercharge our data capability as a leading ANZ venture capital firm. This is a unique opportunity to work cross-functionally across our Investments, Community, Operations and Building Blackbird teams helping us mature our data infrastructure and drive impactful insights across the business.

This role sits within our Data team, reporting to our Data Product Lead Nick, and working closely with the rest of the team, Nora and Ha.

In this role, you will:

  • Own discrete data projects – Working closely with key people across the organisation, you will lead on discrete, high impact projects - particularly across our operations and investment functions. Examples include:
    • Supporting our monthly OKR reporting process.
    • Improving how the team interfaces and visualises data.
    • Improving how teams receive updates and share data on new and live deals.
    • Building dashboards to track the diversity of founders we invest in.
    • Helping to standardise how we collect portfolio and regulatory data from our 110+ portfolio companies, and extracting insights from board packs & company updates.
    • Contributing to larger projects focused on embedding AI tooling into our work.
  • Enhance data quality across the organisation – You will be a steward of our data quality, ensuring that we are ingesting clean and accurate data across our tech stack. Examples include validating portfolio company KPI data, using AI to transform unstructured email data to track portfolio support, improving the data hygiene of our CRM, and maintaining one of the key data sources used in portfolio management.
  • Manage ad-hoc data requests – Ensuring Blackbird has access to high quality data in a timely manner is one of the top priorities of the data team. In this role, you will be first responder on all ad-hoc data requests that come through from our Operations, Investments, Building Blackbird and Community teams. You will gain exposure to the vast needs of the organisation, and have the ability to build discrete products where you see gaps in our current infrastructure to meet the needs of the team, to make repeated and high priority requests self-servicable. Examples include:
    • Analysing how cheque size and entry ownership has changed over time.
    • Pulling  Burn Multiple comps to help a portfolio company with benchmarking.
    • Quantifying the number of events a portfolio company has participated in over the last 12 months.

Position requirements:

We know that candidates, especially women and people from underrepresented backgrounds, often hesitate to apply unless they meet 100% of the qualifications. If this role excites you and you meet most of the requirements, we encourage you to apply. We value potential and are committed to supporting growth in this role.

  • Strong skills and experience analysing financial data: the ability to read, understand and identify key metrics and company data from income statements, board reports and other company documents and the initiative to form meaningful conclusions from the data. Data visualisation experience is a plus.
  • Proficiency in Google Sheets: the ability to quickly interpret and understand complex formulas in Google Sheets - as well as create new formulas - to import, link and make use of existing data sets; and the ability to clean, synthesise and visualise data in Sheets.
  • Resourcefulness and ability to problem solve: the ability to find answers to existing data challenges and suggest ways to resolve them; and the ability to proactively identify data problems that may arise and mitigate them. Ability to experiment with new tools and learn quickly.
  • Innovation and venture obsessed: a genuine passion for venture capital and for ANZ’s startup ecosystem.
  • Low ego: the attitude to understand and embrace the often unstructured landscape of startup and venture capital data and appetite to pick up any data task, no matter how big or small.

Blackbird’s work culture is fast-paced and dynamic. Those who thrive are highly proactive, embrace a strong sense of ownership, and have a strong hospitality mindset. We’re all in it together and we’re looking for someone who is as passionate as us about building a cutting-edge data function fit for a generational VC firm.

This role is a 12 month contract role that is full-time.
